Guided tour of the Town Hall

This carefully restored building now houses the Town Hall Museum. Delve back in Sempach’s history in the course of a guided tour, discover old religious customs and admire the visual documents exhibited in the drapers’ trading hall. The story of the heraldic stained glass windows is bound to fascinate you. Learn some interesting facts regarding the economical importance of the lake before going to the top floor to hear the tales of Confederate and Habsburg soldiers who survived the Battle of Sempach.

The Town Hall Museum Sempach is nominated for the 2017 European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA)

Visit of the towers

Your guide will invite you to look up to the top of the Witches’ Tower. There’s plenty to learn about this mysterious tower bearing a curious name, which was built in the 13th century at the south-east corner of the city walls.

The « Lucerne Gate » was the south entrance to the town and was initially connected to a bridge. Take note of the imposing town clock which dates back to the 17th century and admire Seraphin Weingartner’s artwork painted on the wall.

On the north side of the town, one enters Sempach by passing under the « Oxen Tower » (or Sursee Tower). This gate topped with a tower was also part of the medieval towns walls. It was demolished in 1865, but rebuilt in its original form on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Sempach. From the windows of the tower’s main room, the view over the town is spectacular.

Enter Sempach’s old parish church and admire the frescoes, as well as the altars and the paitings in the choir.
